And a lunch counter of sandwiches, quiche and salads. Everything is made overnight at Simpson Bay and sold at both maisons from opening. Full prices are published on the price list.

How the counter is organised

French bakeries divide the work into three crafts and we keep that division, because they are genuinely different jobs. The bread baker works with time and steam. The viennoiserie baker works with butter and cold. The pastry chef works with sugar, cream and precision. Le Comptoir, the lunch counter, then builds on all three.

Amazing bakery. You can't go wrong with any of the food here. Chef knows what they are doing. Lamination they achieve is likely difficult in this tropical climate, but everything that should be flaky, is spot on. Staff is very friendly and helpful as well.

The best croissants we had our entire trip, and we tried a lot. They have really great coffee too. We stopped here twice. They were accommodating when I let them know I had an allergy. Beautiful spot to sit by the water as well.

Stumbled across this wonderful spot. We had a tasty spinach quiche for a light lunch and almond croissants. Lots of filling. Great atmosphere and view. Chanique was patient with customers who were presented with too many selections.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the bread baked at La Sucriere?
Overnight. The ovens run through the small hours so the first batch is out when Simpson Bay opens at 6 AM. Philipsburg receives its delivery for a 7 AM opening.
Does La Sucriere bake everything in house?
Yes. Bread, viennoiserie and patisserie are all produced at the Simpson Bay kitchen. Nothing arrives frozen from off island, which is unusual here and is most of the reason the croissants taste the way they do.
What is the difference between boulangerie, viennoiserie and patisserie?
Boulangerie is bread: flour, water, salt and time. Viennoiserie is laminated dough, where butter is folded into the dough in layers, which is how a croissant gets its structure. Patisserie is the sweet work: tarts, creams, eclairs and cakes.
Are prices the same at both bakeries?
Yes. The price list applies at Simpson Bay and at Philipsburg. The range on display differs slightly because Philipsburg is a smaller counter.
Can I order ahead so things do not sell out?
Yes, and for the almond croissants you should. Favourites go by mid morning. Send a pickup request with at least 24 hours of notice.
Do you have vegetarian options?
Plenty. Spinach and mushroom quiche, goat cheese and brie sandwiches, salads, and the entire sweet counter.
