A layover at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) is one of the few in the world worth looking forward to. The airport sits directly on Simpson Bay, beside the famous Maho Beach — which means beaches, a lagoon, and proper food are minutes away, not a taxi odyssey. With a few spare hours and a sensible buffer, you can leave the terminal and have a genuinely good time.

Can you leave SXM airport during a layover?

If your passport and visa situation allows entry and your bags are checked through, yes — many travellers do. The non-negotiable is the buffer: give yourself a generous margin to clear security again, and check your airline's guidance for minimum connection times. Hurricane-season afternoons can also bring quick rain bursts that slow traffic, so pad the plan, not the itinerary.

What can you do near SXM in two to four hours?

The classic. Maho Beach sits at the end of the runway, and arriving jets pass low overhead on approach — close enough to feel. It's a short hop from the terminal. One genuine warning: during departures, jet blast is dangerous and has caused serious injuries. Watch arrivals from the sand; stay well clear of the fence when aircraft power up to leave.

Have a real breakfast or lunch in Simpson Bay

Simpson Bay wraps around one of the largest inland lagoons in the Caribbean, and its marinas and restaurants are minutes from the airport. Even an hour outside resets a long travel day: coffee by the water, boats drifting past, warm air instead of gate seating. The point of an SXM layover isn't a checklist — it's that the island starts immediately outside the terminal.

How should you time it?

• Under 2 hours: stay in the terminal. Not worth the security re-run.
• 2–4 hours: Maho Beach or a bakery stop in Simpson Bay — one thing, done calmly.
• 4+ hours: beach time at Mullet Bay or a slow lagoon-side lunch become realistic.

Whatever you choose, work backwards from boarding, not forwards from landing — and keep your buffer sacred.
