The Best Picnic Spots in Sint Maarten (and How to Pack for Them)
A practical guide to the island's picnic-friendly beaches and how to pack a bakery spread that survives the tropical heat.
The best picnic spots in Sint Maarten are the calmer stretches of sand where you can spread out without fighting for room: Mullet Bay and Cupecoy on the Dutch side, and Happy Bay or Friar's Bay on the French side. The trick isn't just picking the beach — it's packing food that still tastes good after an hour in the sun.
We pack picnics for visitors most weeks, so here's how we think about it.
Where should you picnic on the island?
The island is small and there's no hard border between the Dutch south and French north, so you can pick by mood rather than by passport.
Dutch-side beaches
Mullet Bay is the classic choice for a long, lazy afternoon — soft sand and plenty of space. Cupecoy has more dramatic cliffs and pockets of shade, which matters when you're protecting food from direct sun. Maho Beach is famous for the planes coming in low overhead; it's more spectacle than serenity, so it's a better stop for people-watching than for a quiet meal.
French-side beaches
Happy Bay and Friar's Bay are quieter and feel a little more remote — good if you want your picnic to be the main event. Orient Bay is livelier and well set up for a full beach day. Pinel Island is a short hop by boat and rewards anyone willing to plan a small crossing with one of the calmest picnic settings around.
How do you keep food cool in the heat?
It's warm and humid here year-round, so heat is the thing to plan around. A few rules keep a picnic safe and pleasant.
- Use a real cooler with ice packs, not just an insulated bag. Pre-chill it the night before.
- Pack drinks and food separately. Drinks get opened constantly, and every time the lid lifts you lose cold air from the food side.
- Keep anything with dairy, egg, or mayonnaise deep in the cooler and eat it first. Save sturdier items for later.
- Find shade before you unpack. A cliff pocket at Cupecoy or a tree line at Friar's Bay does more than any cooler.
What food travels well to the beach?
The happiest picnic foods are the ones that were built to be eaten away from a table. A baguette sandwich is the workhorse — the crust protects the filling, it holds up without refrigeration for a short window if it's not heavy on mayonnaise, and it's easy to eat with sandy hands. Fill it with cured meats and hard cheese rather than anything that wilts.
Viennoiserie travels beautifully too. A croissant or pain au chocolat eaten mid-morning on the sand needs no plate and no fuss. Sturdier pastries and tarts with a firm base survive transport better than anything with soft cream that softens in the heat. Pack fruit that doesn't bruise, and bring more water than you think you'll need.
A good picnic is mostly about what doesn't need a fork, a fridge, or a flat surface.
The bakery-picnic shortcut
You can plan all of this yourself, or you can start the day by picking up most of it ready to go. We're a French-style bakery and pâtisserie in Simpson Bay, near the lagoon and the airport, which makes us an easy first stop on the way to either side of the island. Fresh baguettes, sandwiches, and viennoiserie are exactly the things that travel — and we can put together an order for a group if you tell us in advance.
Stop in the morning, grab your spread, and head for the sand. To plan a larger picnic order, just ask us ahead of time so we can have everything fresh and ready when you arrive.
